Soft Dinner Rolls
These soft and buttery dinner rolls are the perfect accompaniment to any meal. They’re easy to make and only require a few simple ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups warm milk (105°F to 115°F)
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and divided
- 1 ¼ teaspoons salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt (for sprinkling)
Cooking Guide:
- Prep and First Rise: In a large bowl, whisk together warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes foamy. Stir in melted butter (2 tablespoons), salt, and 4 cups of flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for this step. Knead on low speed for 4-5 minutes.
- Second Rise: Lightly grease a large bowl. Form the dough into a ball and place it in the greased bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape and Third Rise: Punch down the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 15-24 equal pieces, depending on the desired size of your rolls. Shape each piece into a ball. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish or baking sheet, leaving space for them to rise. Cover the dish loosely with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until nearly doubled in size.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with the remaining melted butter (2 tablespoons). Sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
Tips:
- Warm Milk: Make sure the milk is warm, but not hot, to activate the yeast. If the milk is too hot, it will kill the yeast and your dough will not rise.
- Kneading: Proper kneading is important for developing the gluten in the dough, which will result in light and fluffy rolls.
- Rising: The dough needs to rise in a warm place. A good way to create a warm environment is to preheat your oven to the lowest setting, then turn it off and place the dough inside.
- Brushing: Brushing the rolls with butter before baking will give them a beautiful golden brown color and a richer flavor.
- Variations: You can add a variety of ingredients to your soft dinner rolls, such as herbs, cheese, or chopped nuts.
