Philly Cheesesteak Quesadilla
This recipe captures the bold flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak in a melty, cheesy quesadilla.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 large flour tortillas
- 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Optional: Cheez Whiz or another white cheese spread (for extra cheesesteak authenticity)
Cooking Guide:
- Cook the Steak: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Transfer the steak to a plate and set aside.
- Sauté the Veggies: In the same skillet, add the onions and peppers. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until softened and slightly caramelized. Season with oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Assemble the Quesadillas: Place one tortilla on a flat surface. Spread a thin layer of cheese (provolone and mozzarella) over half of the tortilla. Top with steak slices, followed by the sauteed veggies. If using, add a dollop of Cheez Whiz or your preferred white cheese spread. Fold the tortilla in half to enclose the filling.
- Cook the Quesadillas: Heat a griddle or another large skillet over medium heat. Place one quesadilla on the griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the tortilla is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey. Repeat with the remaining tortillas.
- Serve: Cut the quesadilla into wedges and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, like salsa, sour cream, or guacamole.
Tips:
- Thinly sliced steak is key for a tender and flavorful filling. Partially freeze the steak for 30 minutes before slicing to make this easier.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan when cooking the steak. This will lower the cooking temperature and prevent the steak from searing properly. Cook the steak in batches if necessary.
- Get creative with the cheese! You can substitute provolone or mozzarella with other melty cheeses like cheddar, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack.
- Add a kick: Include a sprinkle of your favorite hot sauce or a few slices of jalapeno for a spicy twist.
- Make it a meal: Serve the quesadillas with a side salad, french fries, or onion rings for a complete and satisfying meal.
