Jalapeno Popper Wontons

These crispy, bite-sized treats are a fun twist on the classic jalapeno popper. The creamy filling with a hint of spice is encased in a golden wonton wrapper, making them perfect for parties or appetizers.

Ingredients:

  • 24 Wonton Wrappers
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup chopped Jalapenos (seeded for milder or leave some seeds for spicier)
  • 3/4 cup cooked and crumbled Bacon
  • 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 large Egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon Water
  • Cooking Spray
  • Optional: Chopped chives or green onions for garnish

Cooking Guide:

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese, chopped jalapenos, crumbled bacon, and shredded cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Assemble the wontons: Lay out a wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Brush the edges with the egg wash. Place a heaping teaspoon of the filling in the center of the wonton.
  3. Fold the wontons: There are two popular folding methods:
    • Triangle fold: Bring two opposite corners together over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges to seal. Fold the remaining two corners down towards the base of the triangle and press again to seal.
    • Square fold: Fold the wonton wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Place the filling in the center of the triangle. Bring up the bottom corner towards the top corner, encasing the filling. Brush the top corner with egg wash and press to seal.
  4. Cooking: You can choose between frying or baking the wontons:
    • Frying: Heat enough oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the wontons in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
    • Baking: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet with cooking spray. Arrange the wontons on the baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Serve: Serve the jalapeno popper wontons warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara sauce, sweet chili sauce, or ranch dressing. Garnish with chopped chives or green onions for added flavor (optional).

Tips:

  • Wear gloves when handling jalapenos to avoid burning your hands.
  • If you don’t have time to cook the bacon, you can substitute it with cooked sausage or chorizo.
  • For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese to the filling.
  • Make sure the wonton wrappers are not dried out before folding. If they become dry, briefly dip a clean kitchen towel in water and wring it out. Drape the damp towel over the wontons while you assemble them.
  • Don’t overfill the wontons, or they will burst open while cooking.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat them in a skillet or oven until crispy.
