Homemade Yoshinoya-Style Gyudon

Gyudon, a beloved Japanese comfort food, is a simple yet satisfying beef bowl. This recipe recreates the popular Yoshinoya style, offering a quick and flavorful meal. With tender beef, sweet onions, and a rich savory sauce, it’s a dish that’s sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 500g thinly sliced beef (chuck or sirloin)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups dashi or beef broth
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup mirin
  • 1/4 cup sake
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Optional: shichimi togarashi (Japanese seven-spice powder), sesame seeds, scallions

Cooking Guide:

  1. Prepare the ingredients: Thinly slice the beef and onion.
  2. Make the sauce: In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine dashi, soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Cook the beef: Add the beef to the simmering sauce. Cook until the beef is tender and the liquid has reduced slightly, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the onions: Stir in the sliced onions and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Serve: Ladle the beef and onion mixture over hot cooked rice. Garnish with shichimi togarashi, sesame seeds, and scallions if desired.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of beef and fattier cuts like short rib.
  • If you don’t have dashi, you can use beef broth as a substitute.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more or less sugar.
  • Serve with a side of pickled ginger for a classic accompaniment.
  • For a heartier meal, add a fried egg on top of the gyudon.
