How To Cook Crab Legs (3 Methods)

Crab legs are a delicious and decadent seafood treat. They’re surprisingly easy to cook at home, and there are a few different methods to choose from, depending on your preference. Here’s a recipe for cooking crab legs, with three methods: boiling, steaming, and baking.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound crab legs (thawed or fresh)
  • Water
  • Salt (optional, for boiling)
  • Old Bay seasoning (optional)
  • Lemons, cut into wedges
  • Melted butter, for serving

Cooking Guide:

Boiling:

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. You can add a pinch of salt to the water for extra flavor, but this is optional.
  2. Gently add the crab legs to the pot. You may need to bend them slightly to fit them all in.
  3. Cover the pot and return to a boil.
  4. Boil for 4-5 minutes for thawed crab legs, or 7-10 minutes for frozen crab legs.
  5. Drain the crab legs and rinse them briefly with cold water to stop the cooking process.

Steaming:

  1. Fill a large pot with an inch of water. Place a steamer basket on top. Bring the water to a boil.
  2. Arrange the crab legs in a single layer in the steamer basket.
  3. Cover the pot and steam for 8-10 minutes, or until heated through.

Baking:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Arrange the crab legs in a single layer on the baking sheet. You can sprinkle them with Old Bay seasoning for extra flavor, if desired.
  4. Bake for 15-25 minutes, depending on the size of the crab legs. Smaller legs will cook faster than larger ones. The crab legs are done when they are heated through and the shells are bright red.

Tips:

  • Don’t overcook the crab legs! Overcooked crab meat will be dry and rubbery.
  • To check if the crab legs are cooked through, look for the shells to turn bright red or orange. You can also insert a toothpick into the thickest part of the leg. If the juices run clear, the crab leg is cooked.
  • Serve crab legs hot with melted butter for dipping. Lemon wedges are also a nice accompaniment.
  • You can also add other seasonings to the water or butter, such as garlic, black pepper, or Cajun seasoning.
  • Leftover cooked crab legs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Enjoy your delicious homemade crab legs!
