Baked Ziti Casserole Recipe
This classic casserole is a cheesy, comforting dish perfect for a weeknight meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound dry ziti pasta
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground sausage (mild, spicy, or Italian)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15-ounce) container ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Cooking Guide:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cook pasta according to package directions for al dente. Drain and set aside.
- While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess grease.
- Add onion and garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Assemble the casserole: Spread 1 cup of sauce in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the cooked pasta, then half of the ricotta cheese mixture, and finally half of the remaining sauce. Repeat with the remaining pasta, ricotta mixture, and sauce.
- Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
Tips:
- For a richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and Italian sausage.
- You can substitute marinara sauce for the crushed tomatoes.
- If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce after simmering.
- Don’t overcook the pasta – it will continue to cook in the casserole.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven until warmed through.
- To add a fresh touch, garnish with chopped fresh parsley or basil before serving.
- This recipe is easily customizable. Add in your favorite vegetables like chopped spinach, broccoli florets, or sliced mushrooms.
