Hearty Turkey Chili
This recipe makes a delicious and comforting turkey chili, perfect for a cozy meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced (optional)
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Optional toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped avocado, sliced green onions
Cooking Guide:
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add onion, garlic, and green pepper (if using) to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, chicken broth, chili powder, cumin, paprika, and oregano. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until slightly thickened.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
Tips:
- Spice it up: For a spicier chili, add diced jalapeno pepper with the onions and garlic, or increase the amount of chili powder. You can also serve the chili with a hot sauce on the side.
- Add more veggies: Feel free to add other chopped vegetables to the chili, such as corn, carrots, or zucchini.
- Make it creamy: To make a creamier chili, stir in some mashed avocado or a dollop of plain Greek yogurt before serving.
- Leftovers: This chili tastes even better the next day! Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Thicken the chili: If your chili seems too soupy, you can simmer it for a longer time to allow the liquid to reduce. Alternatively, you can mash some of the beans with a fork to thicken the chili.
Enjoy your delicious homemade turkey chili!
